November 14, 2009, World Diabetes Day

BC Ministry of Children and Family Development staff have informed us that they are conducting a cross-jurisdictional review of the issue of diabetes care in BC schools. We will continue to monitor the situation and hope that this signals the seriousness of the issue, and look forward to seeing Nursing Support Services policies that are consistent with the Safe at School principles.

While this is progress, we still encourage parents and clinicians to continue to educate themselves about the gaps between Canadian school diabetes care and that in the US and UK. Parents also need to to educate themselves about Canadian Human Rights Laws which protect their children's rights, and to advocate on their behalf for better policies.

We may be close to achieving diabetes school care on par with the US and UK, at least in BC. However we can not take this for granted and parents must continue to advocate at school, with Provincial Ministries, and with clinicians.
